Step Pyramid of Djoser, Saqqara — designed by the polymath Imhotep around 2650 BC, the oldest substantial stone structure on earth and the world's first large-scale cut-stone construction. So revered was Imhotep that later Egyptians deified him as a god of medicine and wisdom; the Greeks identified him with Asclepius.
