Borobudur Buddha Statue in Stupa, Java, Indonesia — Each of the 72 perforated stupas encloses a Buddha statue in a different meditation posture (mudra): dharmachakra mudra (teaching) on the lower tier, abhaya mudra (fearlessness) in the middle, and uttarbodhi mudra (supreme enlightenment) on the upper tier. The latticed walls meant the Buddhas could be seen but not touched, experienced from a slight remove.
