Borobudur Terraced Stupa, Java, Indonesia — The three circular terraces crowning Borobudur's summit hold 72 latticed bell-shaped stupas, each enclosing a seated Buddha in meditation. The monument's nine tiers rise from the flat Kedu Plain, oriented to the four cardinal directions and aligning with the surrounding volcanic peaks of central Java.
