Borobudur Narrative Relief Panel, Java, Indonesia — The 2,672 relief panels covering the gallery walls illustrate Jataka tales, scenes from the Lalitavistara (life of the Buddha), and the spiritual realms described in Mahayana Buddhist texts. The lowest tier of reliefs, depicting the realm of desire and its consequences, was deliberately covered with an additional stone wall shortly after the monument's completion.
