Hall of the Abencerrages, Alhambra, Granada, Spain — Legend holds that the Nasrid sultan had the entire Abencerraje noble family massacred in this hall, and the iron-orange stains in the central fountain basin are said to be their blood — though geologists attribute them to mineral deposits. The hall's eight-pointed star muqarnas dome is one of the greatest achievements of Islamic architecture.
